"NURTURING GENERATIONS UNDER
THE CANOPY OF SISTERHOOD"
This block came from Zimbabwe and originally had a green leaf on it. Because there were wooden beads around it, we couldn’t use in the outer border of the quilt but we did attach the leaf on the quilt. These wooden beads are made from a
mutamba tree, with much meaning, which makes it perfect to frame the label on the back of the quilt.
April 2023
SLF CANADA-AFRICA Commemorative QUILT
Our OMAS SISKONA quilt committee worked so well and efficiently that we finished the quilt in two days, not three. Our participation was to add the outer border blocks and add a few more beaded leaves from Africa to the tree. To do this, we first had to square up the quilt and add the inner border before adding the outer borders that came to us from across Canada and from our African Partners.
The quilters contributing to this magnificent commemorative quilt were: OMAS Penny Cressman, Emily Hunsberger, Hilary Walsh, Ruthanne Snider, Gini Nolan, and our invited quilter from the London Grands, Susan Godin. The energy and fun we all shared for this project was contagious and brought the true meaning of this quilt to life by “working together”.
The quilt is now being delivered to the long arm quilter in Kingston. "Stitch by Stitch", a quilting store in Kingston, raised funds to pay the long arm quilter and donated the backing fabric. The Kingston Grandmother's group will bind the quilt.
The batting was donated by Carolyn Hodgson of Waterloo who is a strong supporter of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and a quilter herself. OMAS SISKONA and Megan Karges of SLF also were presented with a $1,000 donation from Peggy Dodds of New Hamburg, to assist in the cost of having the quilt travel across Canada. Peggy is also a strong supporter of SLF through OMAS SISKONA, and is a quilter as well.
