OMAS SISKONA of KW
CREATING FUTURES "ON THE ROAD"

The Creating FUTURES Exhibit opened in Waterloo on May 21, 2014 at the City of Waterloo Museum. At the end of four months it began a tour to nine other Ontario communities were it was hosted by local Grandmother Groups. Together we have succeeded in raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic, and the important work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign to support  African grandmothers in beating back the ravages of the pandemic and now advocating for their human rights.   We have raised funds for the Campaign and we have strengthened our friendship in working to support a common cause.

First stop:
OMAS SISKONA of KW
The City of Waterloo Museum
May 21-September 26, 2014.

Kudos to Karen, Jinni and Judy of The City of Waterloo Museum and to all the OMAS  TAP Committee volunteers.

OCTOBER 17-18
THE PETAWAWA GRANNIES, PETAWAWA ON

The Petawawa Grannies, lead by Jean Ostrum, hosted the Exhibit October 17th and 18th. It was by all accounts a terrific success. Local seniors and high school students got involved and the Petawawa Post gave the event significant coverage. And, the Exhibit generated lots of on-line bidding on the art pieces! Thanks to all for a great start to the tour.
OCTOBER 25-29
THE GLITZY MAMAS, OWEN SOUND

The Glitzy Mamas, Owen Sound, hosted CREATING FUTURES, at the Tom Thompson Memorial Art Gallery from October 25-29.  Their opening event drew support from Tobermory and
Meaford grans. Sybil Mercer of Southhampton, a contributing artist to the Exhibit, donated more of her beautiful Russian punch needlework to a silent auction at the opening. Thanks to Peggy Moulaison, Melissa Sarazin and the entire team for hosting.

NOVEMBER 1-29
GEORGIAN BAY GRANNIES, COLLINGWOOD, ON

Collingwood's Georgian Bay Grannies, all six of them, hosted the Exhibit at the beautiful Collingwood Library from November 1st to 29th. How did they do it you might ask? Member Naceem had a brilliant idea for recruiting volunteers from her community. She posted a large calendar in her salon that listed the volunteer shifts needed for the month. An astounding
38 women signed on! The result? New members for their grandmother group, requests to speak to local groups about the Campaign, and lasting community interest in what the Georgian Bay Grannies are up to. Thanks to Marilyn Jones, Naceem and all who contributed to your success.

JANUARY 15 – FEBRUARY 5, 2015
The Mariposa Grandmothers of Orillia
ON received great support from their community when they hosted the exhibit at the Orillia Museum of Art and History. Marilyn Elliott sent this comment: “The Probus Club in Orillia held a luncheon at the Orillia Museum of Art and History. We clinched in the gallery surrounded by your wonderful textile pieces. What a show! Kathy Duncan from the local Mariposa Grandmothers group spoke about the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the amazing exhibit. What a wonderful day we had! All 46 members were totally enthralled. Congratulations!!

Five different groups of other Grandmothers from the surrounding area came to the opening and we had a great time talking and comparing notes.” Orillia Today’s Frank Matys quoted Kathy: “Pictures don’t do them justice, you really have to see them; they take your breath away". Again, many thanks, we have enjoyed being a part of this event. Congratulations and thanks to all of you for hosting!

FEBRUARY 11 – 23, 2015
The Gogo Grannies of Orangeville ON
hosted CREATING FUTURES at the Falls Gallery in the beautiful Alton Mill Arts Centre. While it was brutally cold, the weather didn’t keep away some 400 visitors who viewed the exhibit there in February. Thanks to Cathy Whitcome and the Orangeville Gogos for hosting and raising awareness and funds for the cause.

FEBRUARY 27 – MARCH 9, 2015
Toronto’s Grandmother’s Embrace
hosted the exhibit at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre with the support of 35 volunteer docents. The place was alive with activity! As if that were not enough, Co-Chairs Leslie Starkman and Ruthann Hicks led The Grandmother’s Network of Toronto in organizing the March 1st , International Women’s Day “Voices of Power: Grandmothers Creating the Future”  a wonderful celebration of the vital role Grandmothers and Grand Others play in shaping the futures of their grandchildren and their communities. On hand were Ilana Landsberg Lewis; Campaign Director, Graham Coultas; Zahra Mohammad, lifelong progressive activist and author, Michele Landsberg; activist, author,  member of the SLF Board, Angela Robertson; dub poet, arts-educator, SLF Arts Academy program designer-facilitator, d’bi young anitafrika; Manager and Co-ordinator of SLF Field Representatives, Ky’okusinga Kirunga, rising star of African music, Ruth Mathiang and others. Thanks Toronto!

APRIL 11 – 19, 2015
Brantford’s Grand River Grannies led by Donna Howell and Susan Butcher were hosts for the CREATING FUTURES exhibit at The Cottage: Glenhyrst Gallery, nestled in beautiful Glenhyrst Gardens in Brantford. The “Festival of Fibre Arts” was a brilliant way to attract lovers of all things fibre and textile! Knitting has taken on new possibilities. The gallery was abuzz with the energy and enthusiasm of visitors to learn more about our cause. Congratulations to all for a terrific exhibit and for your creative fundraising ideas!  See you at the May 1st Auction.

APRIL 21- 26, 2015
Guelph. Last stop on the CREATING FUTURES travel schedule! Close to home, the Guelph GoGo Grandmothers, 4G’s, put together an “OUTSTANDING” show  for their many visitors. Studio 404 was the perfect spot for this exhibit. Ilana Landsberg Lewis was on hand Friday, April 25th to give a heartfelt and informative update about the Grandmother’s Campaign.  Congratulations to Anne Parsons and Sya VanGeest and your gracious member volunteers for hosting a fabulous and successful event!
